QUILES & CLOUD

From humble beginnings in the folk clubs of San Francisco, to hundreds of concerts across thousands of miles, Quiles & Cloud give voice to the landscape of modern America with the timeless blend of storytelling, vocal harmony and acoustic instrumentation. BEYOND THE RAIN, produced by Compass Records co-founder and GRAMMY-winning banjoist Alison Brown, is Quiles & Cloud’s debut record with the label. Their poetic minimalism and pristine harmonies bring to mind bands like Iron & Wine and The Weepies, but their musical portraits of American landmarks such as Deep Ellum and the Rio Grande are distinctly their own.

The synergetic relationship between Maria Quiles (voice and guitar) and Rory Cloud (voice and guitar) is evident in the thoughtful songs they create together, both on recordings and on the stage. Stand-up bassist Oscar Westesson appears on Beyond The Rain and frequently joins Rory and Maria on the road, grounding the duo’s subtle style.

Beyond The Rain reveals a band that has fully matured in the performance space but is ever growing in their sonic simplicity and vivid lyricism.

THE BY & BY

The By & By is new Boston band taking a fresh approach in reviving American roots music. Brought together by the Contemporary Improvisation department at New England Conservatory, The By & By features Leah Hennessy on vocals, Jacob Means on mandolin, and Brad Barrett on bass. On stage, they’re just as likely to borrow and bend a tune from the Carter Family or a Methodist hymnal as they are to recompose Muddy Waters or Blind Willie Johnson. The resulting music is new and challenging, meant to be heard as beautiful take on something that you love. Your ears will be reminded of something between Crooked Still, Lake Street Dive, and Sarah Jarosz. With elements of jazz and improvisation, it’s a contemporary commentary on American Folk.
