Gallery 263 is excited to host another juried exhibition organized by BLAA again this year, after the successful show trans/draw in 2016. The upcoming exhibition, Free Form will be juried by Gallery 263 board president Ben S Wallace.

About the Call
For artists who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community, there is often an expectation that our work will be politically driven and tied directly to our experiences of marginalization. We are shouldered with the responsibility of representing, defending, and/or analyzing our identities, and explaining our relationship to the dominant culture. But what do we make for ourselves, when we’re satisfying our own artistic impulses, exploring our medium, or pursuing non- queer specific avenues of creation? What do we have to say when we’re not trying to engage with the heteronormative and cisnormative world? This show seeks to unburden queer & trans artists from the pressures of representation while still celebrating and amplifying our marginalized voices. For our upcoming exhibition, Free Form, the Boston LGBTQIA Artist Alliance (BLAA) and Gallery 263 are seeking work which is both literally, and metaphorically, “non-representational”, from all artists in the Greater Boston Area who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Work can be figurative, or abstract, and can be in any medium. Our juror will be graphic designer Ben S Wallace, president of the board of directors at Gallery 263.

About the Juror
The grandson of a vignette engraver and son of an oil painter, Ben grew up in the dunes of Cape Cod with a tremendous appreciation for the way art, humans, and nature intertwine. He has a master’s degree in design from Northeastern University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He is currently the senior digital designer at the Harvard Chan School.
