Small Works Project: Joshua Porterfield
My paintings are inspired by the deconstruction and reconstruction of masculine gender roles and narratives as a reaction to insistence on conformity to toxic forms of masculinity.
I am influenced heavily by Baroque, Rococo, and Renaissance painting as well as cartoons and comics. I focus on cartoon characters to further blur gendered assumptions as well as to discuss issues of gender and sexuality free of actual sexiness.
Contradiction and absurdity play a major role in my imagery and I enjoy that my work can function both as serious art and as a bit of silly, good natured lewdness.
